Food brings people together. We all have memories about certain foods that the loved ones made for us. Some remind us of happy times, like the birthday of a family member, some of sad occasions. Food can trigger memories.
One of these foods that is special for me are ribs baked in the oven. When I was a kid, I lived with my family in the city while my grandparents lived in the country. Whenever school ended, I went to visit my grandparents. My grandma used to make baked ribs in the oven for me.
Now, as an adult, I try to make the same ribs for my kids. They are not as good as the ones my grandma used to make but they are close enough. I remember how she was cleaning oven racks with steel wool. I remember everything about my childhood and the time spent on my grandparents’ house.
As I was saying at the beginning, food ties us as family, creates memories. The time spent in the kitchen is worth it, maybe someday my kids will remember me as I remember my family.
Family is important, is all that we have.
